Sixth Form (A Levels)
English Literature

Description

At Cambridge Home School Online, we teach a rigorous, well-rounded, and balanced A Level English Literature curriculum. Students learn how to interpret and evaluate a range of different texts. Our MA/MSc/PhD qualified teachers explore deeper themes, interpretations, contexts, literary elements, and styles of writing to help students become creative, critical, and independent thinkers and writers.

We focus on three main forms of texts: prose, drama, and poetry. Pupils are connected to the wider themes and contexts discussed and often only implied in literature. They become capable of grappling with historical literature and connecting its themes to contemporary settings.

We cover texts from different cultures and periods to maintain literary diversity. This approach helps pupils cover more ground and achieve a level of proficiency. Students secure top grades and gain the confidence, knowledge, clarity, and skills they need to perform well in university. They also develop an affinity for reading and writing literature in their personal life, beyond the academic circle.

Assessment

We offer a range of assessments during our live lessons. These include summative tests, worksheets, pop quizzes, group activities, and more. Using these assignments, our teachers assess each student’s skills and knowledge.

Homework

Homework is given at the end of each week. Students get a chance to polish their skills and cover more ground. We plan homework around a range of topics and subtopics, taking special care to cover everything in the syllabus.

Reporting

Parents are given 24/7 access to their children’s coursework. We also maintain an open line of communication between parents and teachers to ensure complete transparency. Additionally, we hold 3 parent-teacher consultations each year, one in every term. Parents can also set up consultations with teachers at mutually convenient times.

Course Outline

Students are motivated, encouraged, and inspired to develop a genuine interest in the curriculum. As a result, they enjoy each lesson, actively participate in class, and perform well on their tests. The course is developed in response to the classroom’s interests and desires. Each pupil’s individual performance is taken into account to ensure that the trajectory of the class is well-paced and balanced. Students study a range of texts:

  • Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice
  • Fourteen poems from Songs of Ourselves, a Cambridge anthology of 19th Century and 20th Century verse
  • Ten short stories from Stories of Ourselves, a Cambridge anthology of short stories

The course prepares students to sit the following written exams confidently:

  • Paper 1: Set texts, poetry and prose. One hour and fifteen minutes
  • Paper 3: Set text, drama. Forty-five minutes
  • Paper 4: Unseen. One hour and fifteen minutes

Examinations

Parents shoulder the responsibility of arranging their child’s IGCSE examinations at their local registered examination centre. At Cambridge Home School Online, we teach students from different countries across the globe. It’s not practical for our school to manage each student’s local exam registration or offer a single venue for students to sit their examinations.

We presently have students from the UK, Europe, Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Keeping this geographical diverseness in mind, we are not registered with Cambridge International Examinations. However, we have partnered with numerous examination centres registered with CIE, OCR, Edexcel, and AQA.

We also help students find a suitable venue to sit their written and practical examinations. We understand that this process isn’t easy and often requires external support. Students can approach us for any registration-related questions and problems they may have. Our teachers provide complete support and assistance.
