Primary Prep (Key Stage 2)
SPAG

Description

At Cambridge Primary School, we place a strong emphasis on good spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPAG). Our MA/PhD qualified subject specialist teachers build a strong foundation in young students. Our goal is to make every student capable of reading, writing, listening, and speaking exceptionally well. Cambridge Home School Online’s students use accurate spellings, good punctuation, strong syntax, and precise grammar. This is because their SPAG lessons are engaging, interactive, and retentive.

Each week, students are introduced to new SPAG rules and patterns. They develop a good grasp of these basics through practice. We also focus on vocabulary-building. Our teachers help students learn and use a diverse set of synonyms. By using a hands-on approach, we ensure that our students can effectively utilise their knowledge. Cambridge Primary School’s students understand the context of sentences and write with meaning, clarity, and cogency. They understand how changing the punctuation can affect the meaning of sentences. Keeping this in mind, they construct sentences with good punctuation and grammatical soundness.

Our students start developing strong comprehension and articulation skills from a very young age. As they understand the foundational rules, they become better equipped to tackle more advanced lessons in the upcoming academic stages. Our teachers use a systematic and incremental teaching strategy to help students learn the ropes without feeling overwhelmed. We understand that SPAG lessons are often delivered hastily, which makes it difficult for students to absorb the rules and structure.

We break everything down into bite-sized pieces of knowledge that can be effectively understood and retained by students. As a result, our young students pick up on new concepts and techniques with adroitness. Soon enough, basic punctuation, spelling, and grammar become second nature. The learning process never stops. Students continue to cover more ground, gain new insights, and utilise these skills in and outside of school. As they build new concepts atop, they develop a mastery over spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Assessment

We offer a range of assessments during our live lessons. These include spelling quizzes, summative tests, worksheets, pop quizzes, group activities, and more. Using these assignments, our teachers assess each student’s SPAG skills. Students are given a set of weekly spellings each Friday. The following week, a spelling quiz is conducted to help them learn and retain new spellings. We keep introducing new activities and tests based on how students progress. In addition to spelling, grammar, and punctuation, we also emphasise on handwriting and comprehension.

Homework

Homework is given at the end of each week. Students get a chance to polish their SPAG skills and cover more ground. We plan homework around a range of different topics and subtopics, taking special care to cover everything in the syllabus.

Reporting

Parents are given 24/7 access to their children’s coursework. We also maintain an open line of communication between parents and teachers to ensure complete transparency. Additionally, we hold 3 parent-teacher consultations each year, one in every term.
